Thousands of broadcasters publish a legitimate, public live stream. Almost none of them maintain a directory of it. So links rot: a channel changes its stream URL, stops broadcasting overnight, or moves to a new platform, and every page that listed it keeps showing a link that leads to a black screen.
That is why Watch Non Stop checks availability automatically instead of trusting a list. Right now 6 264 of the 8 472 channels in the catalogue are actually on air, and the ones that are not are marked offline rather than left to fail silently.
The four ways a live stream reaches your browser
- HLS — the broadcaster publishes an .m3u8 playlist that any modern browser can play. This is how most national and regional television reaches the open web.
- YouTube live — the channel runs a permanent live broadcast. The embed only plays while the broadcast is actually running, which is why a YouTube channel can look broken when it is simply off air.
- Twitch and Kick — personality-driven live streaming. The embed requires the host site to declare itself, which is why these players fail on sites that copied the code without adapting it.
- Proprietary apps — everything behind a subscription or a native app. None of it is in scope here.
How to tell a working stream from a dead one
A working live page tells you the state of the stream before you click. If a directory shows you a wall of identical thumbnails with no status, it has not checked anything: it is a list, not a guide. Look for an explicit live or offline marker, and for a timestamp saying when that marker was last verified.
What is worth watching live
Live is not a format for everything. It earns its place in four cases: news while a story is developing, sport while it is being played, markets while they are open, and cameras pointed at something that changes on its own — weather, wildlife, a city, the sky.
Is it legal
Watching a stream the broadcaster published publicly, through that broadcaster's own player, is exactly what the broadcaster intended. Every channel plays through the official embedded player of the platform that owns it, and any rights holder can ask for a channel to be removed.
